Communarchy - SAW10

By: Ljubo Georgiev

'Communarchy' was a four days workshop organised by Ljubo Georgiev and Transformatori. It took place during Sofia Architecture Week 2010. The topic of the workshop was the Modernist pre-fab housing compounds built during communism in Bulgaria. The scope of the workshop was not only to give ideas about the development of these areas, but also to accomplish physical interventions, which improve the urban environment. 'Communarchy' relied on small, but concrete steps.

'Communarchy' is the space where communism and anarchy co-exist. The scope of 'Communarchy' is the research into a reality, which is the battlefield of two opposite viewpoints. On the one hand the unfashionable ideal of collectiveness and on the other the reality of the extreme individualism.

The workshop was attended by 16 participants: young architects, architecture and landscape architecture students, anthropologists and sociologists. The results were seven interventions in the 1960's Sofia suburb of Druzba 1.
